Press Release

ABIA: Alex Otti of Labour Party has a significant early lead

07 November 2022

Ahead of the forthcoming 2023 governorship elections, a recent Statewide opinion poll commissioned by Anap Foundation and conducted by NOIPolls Limited was concluded in October 2022. The Poll revealed a significant lead by Alex Chioma Otti of the Labour Party (LP), with Uchenna Eleazar Ikonne of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Gregory Ikechukwu Charles Ibe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) both trailing.

The results showed a significant lead for Alex Chioma Otti with 20% of voters proposing to vote for him if the governorship election were to be conducted today; 9%  propose to vote for Uchenna Eleazar Ikonne (PDP) who fell in second place and Gregory Ikechukwu Charles Ibe (APGA) was third with 4% of voters proposing to vote for him.

Alex Chioma Otti’s 11%-point lead at this early stage is significant, but not sufficient to separate him completely from a leading pack of candidates scoring 20%, 9%, 4% and 3% etc.

Undecided voters and those who prefer not to reveal their preferred candidate add up to a whopping 34% and 25% respectively. The gender split of undecided voters shows that 40% of women are undecided versus 30% of male voters.

Poll Question: Suppose the governorship election is being conducted today, who are you likely to vote for?

The percentage of registered voters is as follows in each of the districts - 84% in Abia North, 91% in Abia Central, and 95% in Abia South.

When asked if respondents were aware of the various candidates vying for Governorship, data gathered showed that 76% of the respondents were aware of Alex Chioma Otti of the LP and Uchenna Eleazar  Ikonne of the PDP, 68% were aware of Ikechi Emenike of the APC, and 54% were aware of Gregory Ikechukwu Charles Ibe of APGA.  All other candidates scored below 50% in terms of name recognition.

Furthermore, the data summarizes top five reasons why voters are more inclined to vote in the forthcoming elections, these include: - Fixing of bad roads (33%), Infrastructural Development (26%), Payment of Salaries (14%), Job Creation/Unemployment  (9%) and Security (5%).

35% of the respondents would love to see their preferred governorship candidates participate in a televised interview and/or debate, with the interview/debates spanning across topics like their party manifestos, agendas, capability check amongst others.

It is worthy of note that 44% of those aged 18-25, 91% of those aged 26-35, 92% of those aged 36-45, 97% of those aged 46-60 and 89% of those aged 61+ responded they would definitely vote in the coming elections. The age groups that expressed the greatest willingness to vote were those between 36-45 and 46-60 years.

The Poll shows that almost 7 in 10 registered voters are absolutely certain that they would be voting in the next governorship election. If they stay committed then we could witness a huge turnout in the March 2023 Governorship elections.

While this Governorship Poll result shows some significant trends, it is key to note that the the race is not completely over as undecided/swing voters would ultimately have their say on which candidate emerges as Governor of Abia State in the 2023 governorship elections.

In summary, our October 2022 Polls are inconclusive in terms of establishing a clear winner as the undecided voters are enough to turn the tables. However, Anap Foundation has concluded that the trends are clear enough to establish the front runners and so our subsequent polls will concentrate on the leading candidates only.
